Five-year-old Alvin (not his real name) lives in a 3-room rental flat with his parents and 3 siblings. One of his siblings is a step-sibling who lives in China with Alvin’s mother’s family.
His father has a history of incarceration for drug abuse and is believed to be still abusing drugs at home. Alvin sometimes shares with his teachers about his father’s aggressive behavior and incidents at home. Although he is doing well academically, he hits classmates and talks back at teachers.
To support the family, Alvin’s mother works 2 jobs. His maternal grandmother, who was the main caregiver of Alvin and his siblings, later returned to China. Since then, Alvin and his siblings have been left to do their homework at a nearby coffee shop or at home, when mom’s out at work.
